How You can Find Time to Read

Hahahahaha! Who has time to read??  These days it's wake up, get ready for the day, head off to work, slave away, come back home, pretend to clean, and go to sleep.  If you have an extra minute to spare, you actually make food instead of something you can microwave.  Then on the weekends it's groceries, social obligations, take care of the laundry that's been piling up, try to relax and reset so on Monday you won't be too burned out to do it all over again!  Sitting down and reading a book is so far down that list we might as well just forget it. But we know we should read, right?  Continue to learn, challenge our minds, exercise creativity and all that?  Why limit our entertainment to movies, TV shows, and Youtube?  Reading makes a well-rounded character.  Or at least it fosters one.  If we don't take the time to read at least one book every now and then, we'll be as flat as our cellphones. But why does it have to take so much tiii...

Apricot Trees and Activities

Image
I grew up with an apricot tree.  It was a sickly thing, and every year it produced less and less fruit.  But when it did, the fruit was sweet and wonderfully fuzzy.  I hated to clean up after its droppings though.  It's like cleaning up after a dog that only goes to the bathroom once a year.  The smell, the texture, the...you know, let's move on. Now I have the wonderful opportunity to take care of an apricot tree once more.  Last year I was right on time for the ripening season!  Except this tree is healthy, and it grew apricots like grapes!  More fruit for me!  Except, they seemed smaller than I remembered.  Meh, it's probably because I'm bigger now.  So I picked one off and bit in! And...it wasn't sweet.  It was dense, and...unfinished.  It's probably because they're not ripe enough!  So I gave them a few more days and the tree started its customary droppings.  I plucked another apricot off and...same th...

Progress Report: The End

The book is almost done with draft 1.5.  I only have about 3 scenes left to write, and I plan on finishing it by Saturday or Monday.  Huzzah!  It's a push, it's a stretch, it's the climax, and I'm loving the details that pop up as I write.  A couple of characters are on the chopping block.  Who will make it through to the other side? I've contacted an artist for the book cover and sent over the story information.  Here's his shop to get an idea of what it might look like:  https://society6.com/azlaar .  I love his work and I'm really excited to see what he comes up with!  I'm also on twitter! Here's my account:  https://twitter.com/MLT_Author .  I occasionally post quotes from the book as I write them, so follow me there if you want to see sneak peeks.  I'm also planning out a monthly/bi-monthly newsletter with even more exclusive content.  Let me know what you'd like to see in the comments below. "Hey, when are you ...

What's Your Favorite Genre?

Image
I like a balanced meal.  Let's have some sci-fi, some fantasy, some thriller.  I'm down for a good mystery, a slice of life, or something more medieval.  YA is fun, Adult can be thought provoking.  Sometimes it's nice to sit down with a kid's book and enjoy the art. So can someone tell me why authors need to write in just one genre? "They don't need to." No, readers just like it a whole lot more when they can rely on Brandon Sanderson to write a fantasy novel instead of a random horror book.  "Authors write better when they cultivate a thorough understanding of a genre." Yeah, deep is better than wide and all that, but after a while don't the books all start sounding the same?  Steak is pretty good, and if I cooked steak every day for a year, I'd get pretty good at making steak.  But don't you think the meal would be improved if I also made mashed potatoes?  Salad?  Dessert? "Listen, if you want to make money, you...
